Beer tasting experiences in the heart of the city
May 23rd 2008 12:19
Not everyone likes beer, but not everyone have tried boutique, or more artistically called 'craft' beer. Most beer haters I know love a small glass of boutique beer for their difference in taste and palate compared to the normal larger styles we get in pubs.
And just like wine - you don't know what you like until you've tried it. So here are some beer tasting experiences you can have in the heart of Sydney, and they really are, quite good
1. Red Oak Boutique Beer Cafe
I have been to Red Oak a couple of times now, and the beer really is superb. The trophies in the glass cabinet tell it all. Red Oak is a micro-brewery that tries their skills in different styles of beer, including Belgian and German, and they do it well too. There are framboise for the fruit lovers and a good stout for those liking their beer with a hint of coffee. I personally love their wheat beer as it was the first wheat beer in Australia I've tried that I actually liked.
201 Clarence St, Sydney - bookings essential. Beer tasting sessions start at $35 per person.
2. James Squire Brewhouse and Restaurant
A famous name and every pub you go you generally can get a good bottle of their famous Pale Ale. However not many people know they do more than the pale ale, and a trip to the brewery is all you need to fill up on your knowledge on this well known brand.
Beer tasting sessions for function bookings only, upon request.
22 The Promenade, King Street Wharf, Sydney
3. Macquarie Boutique Hotel - Schwartz Brewery
Never heard of this brand? Don't worry, you are not alone, but that doesn't mean they don't make good boutique beer. The Schwartz Brewery in the Macquarie Boutique Hotel is a small but tasteful brewery. From largers to ales they have a beer for every one.
Beer tasting and tours from $5 per hour. Bookings essential.
40-44 Wentworth Ave, Sydney

Salty Popcorn
I have done the Red Oak and while the beer was great the service was appalling and I had a 1/2hr argument with the manager over the bill. But Raspberry Beer is sensational! Will definitely try the others out.
I also found this amazing place in MONA VALE, I know - most of you people would need to pack a lunch. But it's this cool boutique brewery and you can go there tasting and then brew your own batch of beer from their selections. You do all the initial work or putting all the ingredients in, they do the upkeep and you come back at the end and bottle your own. I think it's 6weeks wait. You can even design your very own labels. I gave a 6 case present to one of my friends and we are off to make 3 each.
SUSS IT OUT HERE
Another one I would love to visit is the Blue Tongue Brewery in the Hunter Valley. It would be like the best of both worlds, beer and wine all around you. LOL
Nice article!!

I was looking forward to meeting you at one of the hot spots and introducing you to Tisha and Medford. He's always mooching free drinks and snacks . . . but he won't share, the fur ball.
