Sydney is the best city in the world!
April 17th 2008 05:38
As a local, I don't see why Sydney is any better than those culturally enriched cities in Europe, South East Asia and South America. However 10,000 readers of Conde Nast Traveler readers can't be wrong. They have voted Sydney to be the top travel destination in the world two years in a row.
It is "the cleanest (94.78) and most user-friendly (93.68) city abroad" according to their readers poll.
Of course, they don't know about the horror of peak hour traffic, of living in the suburbs trying to get around anywhere in Sydney is simply a nightmare. Nor do they know about the crappy public health system we have in NSW and the dirty little tricks of the NSW government that tries to sell anything public.
But as a traveller, I can see their point of view. They don't need to live too far away from the city. Most accommodation options are around the city and the main attractions and are almost always close to public transport. They don't need to travel in peak hour either - they can sleep until they naturally wake, before heading out to explore this beautiful harbour city.
It is beautiful isn't it? Not many people have the time to really sit down and enjoy the view anymore because our past paced life is so surrounded by money and material things that we forget to stop and breath. I myself enjoy the ferry rides in the inner harbour. I get to see all the expensive waterfront houses as well as really soak in the harbour views. Those who have to do it everyday to commune to work may have taken this for granted, but really it is a stunning experience.
What's your opinion? Is Sydney the best travel destination of the world?
