News: camping on Cockatoo Island
April 8th 2008 05:09
A flip through the newspaper I saw an advertisement about Cockatoo Island - "Cockatoo Island Camping is now open!" it said, accompanied by a photo that looks more than an industrial island rather than a leisure island where camping would be a pleasure.
However, it's apparently Sydney's only central camping ground and is just eight minutes ferry from Circular Quay.
A search on the web I found the official website from Sydney Harbour Federation Trust on Cockatoo Island, and found out that this small patch of land in the inner harbour is the largest island in the harbour and is Sydney's most unusual urban park.
You can visit heritage sites on Sydney's industrial history (as the biggest ship yard of 20th Century Australia), as well as take a picnic and enjoy a day out in the sun on the greens. A fully licensed cafe is available near the ferry terminal catering for those needing a good feed.
So perhaps it is a good place to camp after all, but priced at $45 per an unpowered site, it's not for budget camping!

Lane Cove River Tourist Park at North Ryde (10 kms north of the city) is good value.
$34 for two people, two camp kitchens and heaps of room.
Located in a National Park and nice and quiet.
Easy public transport and somewhere to park your car on van!

Cib - the days of free camping seem to have past - even with national parks you *should* be paying a fee of $7...
And yes, $45 really is a lot, for just a tent pitch...

$7 is the vehicle entry fee for the National Park (free if travelling by foot of course) but there isn't any camping in the main part of the park.
Soooo.... the Tourist Park is a very good option. If anyone wants to learn another language, spend the weekend there! Germans, Dutch, French- very European!
Have a look at their web site if you get a chance, www.lcrtp.com.au
Hi Cibbuano. $34 may seem a bit steep, but the water's hot! And think of the savings in petrol costs. As opposed to travelling too far afield that is!
I still think Cockatoo Island would be interesting to camp on though-as long as there were not too many people there.

Actually not the Lane Cove national park but you can camp in the Royal National Park as well as the Blue Mountains national park for a small fee per tent in their designated camping areas. Royal down south is great coz the site is right on the beach and it's a good trek away from traffic so it feels really good
However, thank you very much for the info and I am sure it'll help many out there that are looking for a tamer camping experience
