Dive with sharks!
April 30th 2008 01:12
It's gotta be the number 1 reason to visit Manly Ocean world. Its aquarium displays are not as great as the one at Sydney Aquarium, but it is one place in Sydney (besides getting out of the harbour) you can have a close shark encounter.
Shark Dive Xtreme lets you dive under the waters close enough to count the teeth in the mouth of a Grey Nurse. Don't worry, as much as they look like they are big and scary, Grey Nurses are one of the nicer sharks in this world. Hence the name. They are in fact quite gentle, unless of course, you initiate the attack, making it angry or annoyed, then getting bitten is probably your fault.
And you don't have to be a certified scuba diver. Beginner diver programs are available and with someone holding your hand, you can't be any safer.
When I went out with a boat to scuba dive near the North Head, we saw a group of three Grey Nurses hovering around minding their own business. In their natural environment of course we stayed at the recommended distance as not to disturb them. They really are fascinating beings.
Further details and bookings can be found on their wbsite sharkdive.oceanworld.com.au

Mum's Word
I did this about 10 years ago.
Ii thoroughly recommend it. It really is trippy.
They do feed the sharks before you are allowed to go into the tank and they recommend that you don't move around too much. If you do move, move slowly.
The other thing I was told was to expect the shark to come up and have a look....after all there's something new in the water and they want to check it out.
I had one actually brush past me and give me a bit of a knock which for a second was a little scary because I thought this shark is going to turn around ask me what my problem was....but as you said, grey nurse sharks are nice.
Like you Amy, when you see them in the harbour, fascinating.
Love & stuff
