Yep. Sydney is always celebrating. After the new years fireworks, after Sydney Festival, after all the beers sold and drank, it's once again time to celebrate - The Chinese New Years: the year of the Rat.
If you want to learn the whole (well, brief) story about how these animals came about, this blog post (Year of the Earth Rat) tells a good story on it.
In full Chinese fashion, the celebration for Chinese new years will start a week before the actual new years. This year, the city of Sydney is putting on another big one, that will include markets in Chinatown, performances in Market City, lots of food, food and more food!
The official launch is going to be on 1st Feb at Belmore Park near Central Station, where Lord Mayor Clover Moore will address us citizens of the importance of celebrating an ethnic new year. This year's Chinatown markets is being relocated to Belmore Park for more spaces so it should be pretty good.
On Sunday 10 February there is going to be a big parade Starting at Park and George Streets, and finishing at Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour. Dancers and performers in beautiful costumes and the traditional lion and dragon dances will be the features. Paper lanterns will be handed out (or can be bought) so you can join in the fun.
The dragon boat races will be on - it's quite a fun thing to watch if you have never seen one - rows of men and women (possibly mostly from the Corporate Dragon Boat cup) paddling away with their short paddles to the rhythm of their drummer's beats. It's quite different to the rowing we know as an Olympic sport but a lot more interesting
Events and celebrations will end 24 February.
