Sydney's Jazz Scene: Soup Plus and more
February 17th 2008 11:45
Melbourners say Sydney has no culture. Where there are hideaway jazz clubs scattered around THEIR city, ours are just right on the footsteps among the city centre.
I believe they just don't know where to look.
Live Jazz and groove music are everywhere in Sydney. My favourite is Soup Plus, right in the centre of the city in a basement, originally located on George St, it now has a place of its own on Margret St in a much larger venue.
Soup Plus has been in the Sydney Jazz scene for more than 30 years, and it continues to be one of the most popular with those who knows where to go. Everyday of the week (but Sundays) there are live band performances, and Friday and Saturdays the cover charge of $35 include a two course meal at the venue. The meal is not bad either, hearty and honest for the peckish and the hungry. Bands usually start playing from 7:30pm onwards and the atmosphere is just great.
Also open for lunch with a more gentle piano performance.
Other places to head to for a great jazz night out at:
The Opera Bar - Opera House Foreshore
Weekends from 2pm live groove bands grace the stage and live jazz Monday to Saturday nights from 8:30pm, while you drink away socially against the backdrop of the harbour and the bridge. Drinks can be on the pricey side but everything similar in venue in Sydney would be about the same.
The Excelsior Hotel - Surry Hills
Home to the talented modernist group of musicians Jazzgroove Association. Plays Tuesday nights at 8pm.
Many many other fine jazz venues exist. You just have to poke your nose a bit to find out
