Sydney's Markets
January 10th 2008 04:23
While large corporate malls and chain stores line the streets of Sydney, there are still places to find a quirky or uniquely designed clothing or jewellery in a market. Sydney has markets galore and you'll find one most weekends somewhere, lurking in the local school or a designated parkland.
What I love about markets is there is always that little store selling something unique. Most markets store holders make their own stuff, whether it be jewellery, or clothing, or crafts or food, they have their own style that cannot be found anywhere else. I love having a pair of earrings that cannot be found in Westfield or any other mainstream stores!
Another thing about markets are the selection of second hand items for sale. Books for example, is timeless. A good book can be kept forever and read over and over again. Markets are full of second hand books and often I will find something I have been meaning to read for a long time, for only a fraction of the price they would be sold in book shops!
In most areas in Sydney, there will be a market on the weekend, it's just a matter of finding them. So here is a list for you to consider.
If you have one you would like to recommend, please feel free to add to the list in the comments!
1. Glebe Markets
One of the most well-known and established market in Sydney. Here you can find clothes, crafts and jewellery as well as many books and second hand items on sale. In a good village vibe of Glebe and surrounded by cozy cafes and restaurants and minutes away from public transport, this is one of my favourites!
Open Saturdays only.
2. Bondi Markets
Right opposite the beach in Bondi Beach Public School, is another market where you'll definitely find what you are looking for. Not to mention, it's right there at the most famous beach in Sydney, you can lie around on the golden sand and go for a dip in the sparkling blue ocean before heading over for a stroll around the markets. This would make a great day out!
Open Saturday and Sundays.
3. Rozelle Markets
Well known for the second hand goods, if you are looking for books, second hand clothing or furniture, this is the place to go! Open both Saturday and Sundays.
4. BlueSky Markets
A 'chain' of markets mostly for tourists, these markets are located at Manly and the Opera House. Both international visitor attractions, it's slightly more pricey (naturally) but against a great backdrop of Sydney Harbour, it's not bad to just have a look around while you are there.
These are also the guys that organise special Summer market days such as the Manly International Jazz Festival markets and the Narrabeen Village markets.
Check website for dates.
5. The Rocks Market
Everyone knows the Rocks markets. Unfortunately it's slightly overrated. Still, for international visitors, worth going to have a look, you can get a variety of souvenirs here as well as some great local produce.
Open every Saturday and Sunday.
6. Paddy's Markets
Right in the heart of the city, Paddy's Markets is probably where everyone goes for cheap souvenirs and fresh vegetables. The trick is to go on a Sunday afternoon when they have all the vegies on sale as they can't keep them for the next week!
Extremely crowded, and not much atmosphere, would go for the convenience only.
Opens Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sundays and public holiday Mondays.
7. Fairfield Markets
The third largest and one of the best run markets in Sydney, sells new goods only. Parking is easy and there are lots of good Asian meals around the place!

I've three remarkably clever children trouble is I forgot to tell them to love me.
I've had quite a few pleasant outings with friends over the years, to markets. Nice and relaxing and every now and then you do get to see things you've never seen anywhere else before.

Nina - Paddy's does have some good stuff on sale. I suppose most of the time I don't go to markets with intension to buy so I do prefer one with a good atmosphere
