The Windsor hidden in the Hills

Windsor is one on the edge of the extended suburban town of Sydney, with an atmosphere more like a country town.

It is a history wonderland as part of Lachlan Macquarie's give towns (along with Pitt Town, Wilberforce, Richmond and Castlereagh). The St Matthew's Church (1821) is simple but elegant, featuring beautiful stain glass windows. The graveyard in the church grounds dates back to 1810 with lots of well preserved historic graves of some prominent early Australians such as William Cox and John Tebbutt.

A walk through town centre is a pleasant experience. On weekends the town market is a hit with many local crafts and produce being featured items. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants to rest your feet when you've had enough browsing.

Windsor is at the foot of the blue mountains as well as being surrounded by the national parks and the banks of the Hawksbury river, it's no wonder Sydney-siders likes to take a day trip out to relax and unwind.

Windsor is 55 km north west of Sydney city and is just over an hour by car or train.

aaahh.. someday I WILL go back to Australia and explore more of the east coast. I just love Australia (to think I've only been to the Perth area) unfortunately finances and time hadn't allowed me to go back

I will someday and hopefully this time with hubby and kiddo

Sounds like a place I'd like.

Love checking out old buildings and craft markets. Give me a little country town over city mayhem any day.
